
Biography
Maureen McKane, MSW, LCSW, retired from her psychotherapy practice, McKane & Associates, PC and took up the pen she had long held in the background. She honed her essay skills while a columnist for the Aurora (Illinois) Beacon News and a mental health blogger on her late business site. Her book, Walters Way: A Coach, His Runners and His Race will be published February 9, 2026 by Koehler Books.

Her lifelong interest in understanding racism started in Jim Crow Virginia when state schools closed and only White children were educated. That was her 6th grade. After settling in Aurora, Illinois, she headed the non-profit board of Aurora Community Study Circles for inter-racial dialogue and facilitated the citizen groups. Maureen received her MSW degree from University of Illinois Chicago and a two-year Post-grad certificate in Family Therapy from the Family Institute at Northwestern University. She sits on the Aurora Human Relations Commission.
